What are free spins in casinos? The terms that price them

A free spin is a pre-paid stake on a named slot. Its winnings usually carry wagering, a cap and a clock. What Great Britain's rule says, with napkin maths.

Free spins in casinos are pre-paid spins on named slot games, at a stake value the casino fixes. You do not pay for the spin, but the winnings are usually credited as bonus funds, which commonly carry a wagering requirement, a withdrawal cap and an expiry clock. Those terms, not the spin count, set what the offer is worth.

This is an evergreen explainer. No operator’s free-spins terms were read for it, so every spin value, cap and expiry figure below is illustration, not any casino’s data.

What are free spins in casinos, as a contract?

Read as a contract, a free-spins offer has five working clauses. Two set the size of the stake; three decide how much of the result you keep.

  • Spin value. Each spin is played at a fixed stake. Twenty spins at $0.10 is $2 of play, whatever the banner says.
  • Eligible games. The spins work on the slots the terms name, and nowhere else.
  • What the winnings become. Commonly bonus funds rather than cash. Offers sold as “no wagering” commonly credit them as withdrawable money; the terms say which.
  • Wagering. The number of times the winnings, or sometimes the spin value, must be staked before they can be withdrawn.
  • Win cap and expiry. A ceiling on what can leave the account, and a deadline for using the spins and finishing the wagering.

Two of those clauses have their own posts here: game weighting, which sets how fast each game clears the wagering, and the max cashout, which is the win cap by another name.

What is the difference between bonus free spins and the free-spins feature?

The phrase covers two different things, and the search results mix them. A bonus free spin is a promotion: the casino pays the stake and attaches terms. The free-spins feature is part of a slot’s own design, a bonus round triggered during ordinary play, commonly by landing scatter symbols. Its winnings are game winnings on your normal balance, with no promotional wagering attached. Only the first kind is priced by the clauses on this page.

Do free spins have wagering requirements?

Commonly, yes, and that is where the price sits. Of the three top-ranking guides read for this query, NetLingo’s free spins explainer gives the multiple as 20 or 30 times, with no source for the figure. BetMGM’s guide, in the text read, gives no multiple. None of the three, in the body text read, cites a regulator.

In Great Britain, one does set a ceiling. The Gambling Commission’s SR Code 5.1.1 says licensees must not apply wagering requirements, which require a customer to play through bonus funds, over a maximum of 10 times. It defines a wagering requirement as having to make wagers totalling a particular value for funds to become withdrawable. Where free-spin winnings are credited as bonus funds, that is the clause in play. The same code bars an incentive from including more than one type of gambling product, listing betting, casino, bingo and lottery.

The Commission’s own blog post on the new incentive rules, posted 12 December 2025 by Senior Policy Manager Pradeep Rajania, says the requirements came into effect from 19 January 2026, and that offers designed on the basis that a consumer plays different gambling products are no longer allowed. A casino-spins reward for placing a sports bet is the shape that wording describes.

This desk read the code page, the blog post and the NetLingo page on 30 October 2026. The 10x ceiling is a Great Britain rule for Commission licensees; other markets set their own terms, and none was read for this post. The site’s UK 10x post covers the cap in full.

How do free spins work on a napkin?

Two illustrations, both invented to show the order of operations. The winnings figure is an assumption; a spin can return nothing.

LineIllustration AIllustration B
Spins x value20 x $0.10 = $2100 x $0.20 = $20
Winnings, assumed$5$30

Illustration A uses the Great Britain ceiling. Illustration B uses the top of NetLingo’s range. The bigger offer has ten times the face value and eighteen times the play-through; every extra stake is another chance for the house edge to take the balance back before the cap even matters.

Free spins questions

What is the difference between free spins and regular spins in slots?

A regular spin is paid from your own balance at a stake you choose. A bonus free spin is paid by the casino at a stake it fixes, on games it names, and its winnings commonly land in a bonus balance with conditions attached. A slot’s in-game free-spins round is different again: a feature of the game itself, won by play, with no promotion terms.

How do free spin bonuses function in online slots?

The casino credits a set number of spins at a fixed value to one or more named slots. You play them, and whatever they return is typically credited as bonus funds. Those funds usually have to be wagered a stated number of times before they become withdrawable, often under a win cap and inside an expiry period set in the terms.

How do I effectively use free spins in an online casino?

Read the terms before the spins, not after. Find five things: the value of each spin, which games they work on, whether winnings are cash or bonus funds, the wagering multiple and what it applies to, and the win cap and expiry. Multiply them out on paper. If the arithmetic leaves little withdrawable, the spin count was the headline, not the value.

The banner counts spins; the terms count what you keep, and they change without a new banner. Read the current ones before the first spin. Bonus Wire publishes no bonus codes and recommends no offer. 18+; gamble responsibly, begambleaware.org.
