What does a 40x wagering requirement mean? The arithmetic

A 40x wagering requirement means staking 40 times the bonus before withdrawing. A worked turnover table, set against Great Britain's 10x cap.

A 40x wagering requirement means placing bets worth 40 times the bonus before winnings from it can be withdrawn: £4,000 of stakes on a £100 bonus, at full weighting. Charged on deposit plus an equal bonus, it doubles. In Great Britain, Gambling Commission licensees may not exceed 10 times the incentive amount.

This is an evergreen explainer. On 31 October 2026 this desk read the Commission’s decision on wagering requirements, last updated 27 January 2026, and its announcement of the cap. No operator’s 40x terms were read, so no operator is named.

How much do you need to bet for a 40x wagering requirement?

Multiply the base by 40, then divide by the game’s weighting. The base can be the bonus alone or deposit plus bonus. Weighting is the share of each stake that counts; a consultation respondent’s example is roulette at 30 percent, where each £1 wagered contributes 30 pence. Every figure below is illustration.

Terms (£100 deposit, £100 bonus)Full weightingRoulette at 30%A game at 10%
40x on the bonus£4,000£13,333£40,000
40x on deposit plus bonus£8,000£26,667£80,000
10x on the bonus, the GB maximum£1,000£3,333£10,000

The base clause doubles the bill; the weighting multiplies it again.

Is a 40x wagering requirement allowed in the UK?

Not from a Gambling Commission licensee. The decision page says wagering requirements attached to incentives “must not exceed 10 times the incentive amount”, and the announcement says the changes came into force on 19 January 2026, a date moved from 19 December 2025. A 40x offer is four times that limit; 40x on deposit plus bonus is, on the table above, 80 times the bonus. Ontario, as this site found, sets no number; other markets were not checked. The British rule is detailed in the UK maximum wagering requirement.

In this decision the Commission left weighting alone. It wrote that, on current evidence, it did not think it necessary to review weighting rules at this time, while expecting wagering terms to be clear and transparent. In the consultation, one operator’s breakdown showed 75 percent of its offers already within 1 to 10 times: one firm’s book, not a market figure. The weighting maths is in what is game weighting in casino bonuses.

Questions readers ask

What does a 40x wagering requirement mean?

It means placing bets worth 40 times the bonus before its winnings can be withdrawn: £4,000 of stakes on a £100 bonus at full weighting, and more on games that count only partly. On a deposit-plus-bonus base, £100 plus £100 means £8,000. Both figures are illustration.

Does the average person wager 40x deposit?

None of the pages this desk read measures what an average player stakes, so no figure is given here. A 40x requirement binds only a player who takes the bonus. On a deposit-plus-bonus base, £100 matched with £100 asks for £8,000 of stakes, as illustration.

Is 40x wagering allowed in the UK?

Not on an incentive from a Gambling Commission licensee. Since 19 January 2026, wagering requirements attached to incentives must not exceed 10 times the incentive amount, so a £100 bonus can ask for at most £1,000. The rule covers Great Britain; elsewhere, that market’s own rules apply.
